Starlight Theatre - Rockford, IL

The Bengt Sjostrom theatre was a design / build project by architect Studio Gang Architects. The ingenuity that characterizes live performance is on display in this theater that dissolves the boundary between stage and sky. A copper-clad steel frame proscenium and a cast-concrete ticket building face each other across an open-air seating bowl for an audience of 1100. The key to the project's success, however, is a kinetic roof that opens the theater to the sky. Six wooden panels set within slender steel frames were prefabricated on the ground and hoisted into place. Choreographed to open helically over 12 minutes, the roof forms a star-like pattern and recalls traditional hoist technology used in theaters for centuries. Barbizon provided an Electronic Theatre Controls dimming and control system and a DMX control that can be easily upgraded to an Ethernet based control system in the future.
