American DJ
www.americandj.com

American DJ's featured product at the show this year was the P36 and P64 LED PAR Cans. American DJ has applied LED technology to PAR cans. The company's new DMX-compatible P36 LED and P64 LED PAR Cans are equipped with light-emitting diodes, allowing users to create virtually any color via RGB color mixing. The P36 LED and P64 LED's RGB color-mixing process combines red, green and blue LEDs to create any desired shade. The P64 LED is equipped with 151 LEDs (51 red, 49 green, 51 blue), and the P36 LED with 61 LEDs (21 red, 19 green, 21 blue). With their RGB mixing, the P36 LED and P64 LED give users complete control over the color scheme of their lighting presentation, right from their DMX controller. The P36 LED and P64 LED make it easy to design customized colors to set any mood or highlight any object or event. In addition to creating limitless colors, the P36 LED and P64 LED are very economical to operate. The fixtures run on low voltage, which makes them energy efficient. The LED lamps also have a long lifespan. The fixtures operate with limited UV emission, producing very low heat.

Apollo Design
www.internetapollo.com

Smart Move Vertical.
This is an accessory that moves your gobo up and down within your fixture. You can control how far in and out of the focal plane your image will move and how fast. You can go from a very slow movement to very quick to resemble an earthquake. I had heard people on the show floor speak of it as a gobo changer. I asked this specific question and was told that at this time the Smart Move Vertical could not act a gobo changer. They are however working on that. The Smart Move Vertical will not be available for sale until some time in the first quarter of 2006.

Smart Color MXR.
Apollo is working on a Dual string Scroller so that you will be able to mix your colors. The cool thing about this one is the smooth transition you will have from color to color with in each string. There will be some kind of gradation from color to color. Again this product will not be available until the 1st or 2nd quarter of the 2006.

Tapered Top Hat.
Someone finally came out with a Top Hat that will stack and not topple over. They will also take about 1/10 the space to store. The Tapered Top Hat comes in 6.25" and 7.5". Currently they are not flocked but?..

Frosted Dichroics.
The diffusion is on one side of the glass and the dichroic coating is on the other side making it a medium frost. What I understand is that one side of the glass is "sand blasted" to make the diffusion. That is why on the dichroics they will only frost one side.

Frosted Glass.
Glass that is frosted in the same manner as the frosted dichroics. Frosted on one side is medium and on both sides is a heavy frost.

Lens Holder.
The Lens Holder is a two-piece system that will securely attach a lens to the front of an MR16 lamp. It is made of metal and will hold glass up to 1/8" thick.

Applied Electronics
www.appliedelectronics.com

Applied came to the show with new items in its truss and dimming line. Their new trussing solution is I-Beam truss, round-tube aluminum truss with an internal I-beam inside the tubing to increase the structural strength of the truss. Available in their Double-Hung or Club Truss, the I-Beam truss provides double the strength of their standard tubing.

On the dimming side, Applied has moved into the distributed dimming market with its new 6x1200W Dimmer Bar. Available in white or black, this dimmer bar has circuit breakers located at each receptacle. A test panel is located at the end of the bar for focus buttons, etc. All Applied Electronics dimmers are now UL listed. The new applied motor controllers are pending UL listing, and they offer a motor controller in a waterproof enclosure for those weather-sensitive projects.

Arri
www.arri.com

Arri Inc. premiered its ARRIMAX 18/12. This new light was demonstrated with a prototype automated stirrup for remote refocus on large scale productions. ARRIMAX 18/12 uses an 18kw S.E. HMI lamp and combines the variable beam spread of a Fresnel and the light output of a PAR. It uses a unique reflector concept for beam control eliminating the need for spread lenses.

Also highlighted were the Arri X Ceramic and the Arri Studio Ceramic 250w. Debuted at last years LDI with the Philips long life (4000hr) 3200k 250w arc lamp, these same integrated ballasted fixtures may now be used in daylight applications with the introduction of a new Philips 5600k 250w lamp. The Arri X Ceramic, combined with an intensifier and Chimera diffusion panel, rivals the output of a 2000w tungsten softlight while only using 250w.

DeSisti
www.desisti.it

DeSisti Lighting reintroduced the popular Monet fresnel, with a theatrical twist - it now uses an HPL575 or 750W Lamp as the source. This fixture provides the softer edge and nice barndoor cuts characteristic of a fresnel instrument. It is perfect for a theatrical venue that wants to keep only one lamp type in inventory. Another compliment to ETC's Source Four product line is DeSisti's Pole Operated Yoke for the Source Four Ellipsoidal. A great way to refocus your Source Four when it's at high trim!

The CST 250W Fresnel uses a 250W Ceramic Metal Halide Arc Lamp available in both 3200 and 5200K. This lamp is an evolution of the popular 150W CDM, with similar output to a 750W Tungsten Lamp but this time in a version capable of a hot re-strike. Dimming is accomplished with a DMX controlled mechanical dowser, neatly hidden behind the fresnel lens.

As an adjunct to the Rigging and Automation product line, DeSisti had on display an extruded aluminum structural raceway. The channel allows for a 15' span between pick points, and has separate compartments for 120V branch circuits and low voltage wiring.

They also had the complete line of Lite System Products which is a complete pre-packaged system consisting of a Lite Control Console, three SCRimmer sticks and twelve complete PAR 56 luminaires.

ETC
www.etcconnect.com

Source Four
The Source Four has been a champion of Lumen output for many years and now ETC has "upped the ante" on imaging with the new Enhanced Definition Lens Tube. The EDLT does not constitute a new Source Four - but a new Lens tube that can be fitted into any Source Four already in the market. The EDLT will then deliver near-perfect imaging with a stunning contrast ratio and even crisp image across the entire field. This is a new lens making technique and more advanced anti-reflective coatings that eliminate stray light inside the fixture. The EDLT will sell for about $100 more than standard Source Four lens tube. It will be available in 19, 26, 36 configurations by the end of the year and a 50 unit early next year.

Not stopping with image quality alone, ETC was previewing two new Source Fours in a demo room off the show floor. First they were showing a 14? unit for longer throws such as balcony rails and second box booms. The 14? unit uses a new lens tube that is much smaller than the easily recognizable "big head" 10? Source Four. It will easily fit into those hard to focus areas and looks amazingly bright.

Perhaps the most impressive model though was the new 95? Source Four. Perfect for short throw distances or just for sheer volume of light - this unit delivered a crisp Gobo image that filled the room it was being shown in. It also produced impressively straight shutter cuts considering the field angle.

Control
Fresh off its final beta test on Europe's largest televised event the Eurovision Song contest, the ETC Congo console debuted in North America. The controller hit its LDI debut having already been installed in several US venues from NBC's The Tonight Show to colleges and regional theatres. Congo was being presented as "Complete Control" a phrase ETC is using to describe the console as built from the ground up for modern lighting needs like control over LED's, Media Servers, and Moving Lights. Congo was controlling a flurry of Moving Lights and a Hippotizer Media Server using ETCNet2 (recently implemented by Green Hippo.)

ETC was also previewing a beta release of the Mac version of the Congo Offline Editor and client software. Finally - a console for a true Mac user! Also in the offline software was the ability to import certain data from Lightwright and excel files. This software was not yet released, but promised before the end of the year.

The Congo demos were many layers deep and seemed to last a long time with large audiences.

Dimming
As a leader in dimming ETC has been a first mover in the new technology of Sine Wave dimming. At this show they were showing their new Sensor SineWave system in 2 rack sizes of 24 and 48 dimmers respectively. Sensor SineWave is installed in several US venues already. SineWave dimmers can be used to dim virtually any load, including ballasted HMI's and super sensitive loads like noisy neon ballasts, in absolute silence. Learn more about ETC SineWave technology at http://www.silentdimming.com.

SineWave in a rack dimmer is nice, but for those who want more flexibility - ETC debuted the SineWave Power Module. The Power Module allows anyone to take advantage of SineWave dimming without buying a whole new system. Each power module contains 2, 4, or 6 SineWave dimmers combined with an ETCNet2 DMX node. Remarkably - this achieved for little more than the cost of a node alone! The dimmers are 1200 watts each and have an option to slave together as a single 20A dimmer for 2k loads. As a convection-cooled unit, the Power Module is completely silent in operation and at the lamp filament. Check out the SineWave Power Module here.

Smart Solutions
ETC did not stop at the high end of the market - with new additions in their popular Smart Solutions range as well. Debuting at LDI this year was SmartLink - a new architectural system for ETC products. SmartLink features easy plug-and-play installation in ETC dimming and switching products allowing simple architectural control from SmartLink stations. Best of all, SmartLink is included free of charge in many ETC products! Learn more here.

By dealer request, ETC was previewing a 4 x 6A SmartModule for simple dimming convenience from a regular wall outlet. This show also marked the premiere of the SmartSwitch relay panels in 24 and 48 20A relay sizes. SmartSwitch is a very powerful DMX relay and it supports SmartLink stations for simple remote preset recall.

General Electric
www.ge.com/en/

General Electric's newest edition to its range of single ended CSR lamps is the CSR800/SE/HR. Good news, since to this point, they were the only manufacturer of this lamp used in portable HMI systems.

Another interesting group of lamps GE has brought to market are the CSR UV Control lamps. This new line of lamps reduce UV emissions by more than 85% and have a 95% reduction of UVB and UVC. These lamps have a blue base to distinguish themselves from the normal CSR/CSD lamps. All of these lamps are dimmable with stable color temperatures.

High End Systems
www.highend.com

Studio Command
High End Systems debuted its Studio Command. The Studio Command offers lighting professionals a "command performance" in the most demanding events, be it in the theatrical, corporate, concert touring, house of worship markets or any other show or installation requiring a powerful wash fixture. Studio Command's patented lenticular array optical system enhances the homogeneity of the projected light. The optical head is compact and light in weight, while still offering a large diameter exiting beam. The proven long-life MSR 700 lamp emitting 55,000 lumens (at 5900K) is shipped as a standard complement providing deep and powerful reds. Alternatively the MSR 700/2 lamp emitting 55,000 lumens (at 7200K) can also be fitted in the field. The CMY dichroic color-mixing system provides rapid and quiet color changes, and the mechanical douser provides a smooth fade to black. The 8.25-inch output beam is full and vibrant and takes on a searchlight effect look, as the output lens is positioned relatively close to both the pan and tilt axes. The moving yoke fixture, controlled by DMX, features an adjustable field angle from 18 to 32 degrees. It also offers a variable mechanical and electronic strobe, with extra punch provided by the Light Burst? effect.

Catalyst v4
After a "sneak preview" at PLASA, High End Systems also debut its new Catalyst v4 software. Catalyst, which HES introduced in 2001, is the software and media server fusing lighting with digital media, allowing the creation of virtual scenery and unlimited visual effects. Its markets range from concert tours and corporate events to television and houses of worship. Catalyst v4 is enhanced with onscreen programming and playback (meaning no DMX console is needed), pixelMAD functionality for support of LED fixtures, and more than 120 new color and visual effects resulting in a combination of 3,000 new effects. Additionally, Catalyst v4 can be programmed with MIDI control surfaces or the timeline-based automated playback plug-in. High End Systems will offer three versions of Catalyst v4 software to accommodate a range of budgets and features needed: Catalyst v4 Pro, Catalyst v4 DV and Catalyst v4 Xpress. Catalyst v4 will be released in January 2006.

Hoffend was also showing its new Vortek Point Hoist, a vertical or horizontally oriented point hoist that also can tie into its VAC Vortek controller. The Vortek Point unit is lightweight enough to be moved around a grid for multiple positioning, or as a chandelier hoist. It is also rugged enough for mobile applications to replace a chain motor.

Hubbel
www.hubbell.com

A much needed improvement to the rubber single pole cam style connector. They have added a nylon sleeve where the pin slides into the shoe. This makes insertion extremely easy. They have also improved on the retaining screw for the connector. The nylon-threaded screw goes all the way through the pin to insure a solid lock.

They have also improved on the snapback covers for their panel mount connectors in two ways. First, adding rubber to the inside of the cover insures a tight, non-conductive seal, and second a small addition of a nylon spacer yolks the cover out far enough to be sure it closes all the way.

iLight Technologies
www.ilight-tech.com

iLight Technologies offers a long lasting substitute for neon signs by using single color LED's to illuminate a frosted diffuser. This year iLight introduced Plexineon RGB a color changing product with DMX control. This product can be used in standard 2', 4', 6' & 8' lengths, or can be designed to meet custom requirements by the factory. Also new for this year is the Daytime Plexineon Series. Although Daytime Plexineon is not lit during the day, it appears to be. A special absorption/emission process absorbs sunlight while allowing the LED light to pass through. This makes the sign or display effective 24/7, not just at night.

The addition of several new small accessory items, such as the Atta Pin, Road Flags, and Matth Ties are the perfect addition to almost any grip package. With the Max Stand, you can put a light almost anywhere needed, up 20 feet high and extended 8 feet from the stand. It is very adjustable and can support up to 75 pounds, and folds up and rolls away easily with one only one person. The line of Digital stands is very solid, lock in place like a rock, and come in a wide variety of sizes. In the future, they will have the ColorNett scrim material, which has either a gold or silver color woven through the material. The gold will warm up the color temperature of a light source, while the silver cools it - very useful for those subtle shifts in color.

Early next year, Matthews will be introducing Road Flags, which are a great way to take those studio flags out on the road with you. They consist of a very lightweight 4' by 4' frame that is collapsable and comes standard with 1 each of a scrim, solid, and diffusion, which will easily and quickly slip over the frame. A case for travelling is also included.

Robert Juliat
www.robertjuliat.fr

Upon visiting the Robert Juliat booth at this year's LDI, I was drawn to one new product in particular; the recently redesigned Korrigan 1011+. The new version of the popular followspot is called Super Korrigan 1149. This new release uses a 1,200 watt HMI light source and features a SX double condenser optical system. The optical system is more efficient than its previous system and transfers 25% more light output, not a small feat. The fixture has a new "A" size gobo holder along with a large ergonomically designed handle. One feature that I was most impressed with, other than the increase in output, was the new 4 blade dimmer shutter. It was very smooth in operation and light pattern. This fixture has hot re-strike, a DMX option and a 7 degree to 14 degree zoom range. This is a very well built followspot.

Rosco
www.rosco.com

X-Effects Projector
The Rosco X-Effects Projector provides large scale 3-D effects. These effects are created by rotating two "A" size glass gobos off-center of the optical path. This results in a projection that does not appear to have a visible direction or pattern. Introduced just over a year ago, Rosco's X-Effects has been specified and installed in many permanent installations. These include aquariums, museums, retailers and theme parks. They have also been used in Broadway productions. The Rosco X-Projector has been upgraded with DMX and dousing capabilities. It is available in two configurations. For theatrical entertainment lighting specify the model with DMX on board. Using five DMX channels, the unit has full control of each effect gobo, lamp strike, and light output. The DMX-controlled douser, also initiated through your lighting control board, directs not only the light output but blackouts and fades as well. Where DMX is not available or required, the original X-Effects Projector includes onboard potentiometers to control the speed and direction of both gobos. The X-Effects projectors are supplied equipped with a 200-watt Enhanced Metal Arc source and your choice of a 19,30,50,70 degree lens.

Filter Holder for MR-16 Lamps
Sometimes it's the little things that make our work easier. This new filter holder for an MR-16 lamp is a simple solution with a big impact. Use it to add glass filters, color or diffusion, to your MR-16 fixtures. Whether you are designing for the stage, specifying fixtures for an architectural project or lighting a store display, MR-16s are used everywhere. But most track heads hold open-faced lamps and are not equipped with a filter frame, so installing color can be a challenge. The MR-16 Filter Holder makes it easy. Place a 1.95" diameter (49.5mm) glass lens into the holder ring, set the MR-16 in next, and then clip the retaining ring around the reflector. It's that quick. The MR-16 Filter Holder can be purchased alone or with any of Rosco's 44 standard Permacolor dichroic colors or any one of a huge assortment of library colors.

Rosco Keystroke
Keystroke is the hardware/software solution every school and every theatrical professional has been looking for - a way to execute Power-Point projection cues directly from their DMX lighting board. The Keystroke hardware interface has two 5-pinXLR ports. The male port is used to receive DMX, while the female XLR port is a DMX pass through. The device is supplied with a USB A/B cable and a CD containing the required software. You can use Keystroke to trigger and keyboard commands from your lighting control board to a Windows XP based personal computer. Beside Power-Point slides, Keystroke can also activate sound cues and other PC applications used theatre, worship or live entertainment.

Rosco Infinity
Rosco's new gobo animation device offers superb kinetic lighting effects combined with simplicity of use and low cost. The Infinity device affixes to the gel frame of virtually any spotlight. You can choose from among II animation disks listed in the Rosco catalog and web site. Affix one of the disks to the device, place steel or glass gobo in the gate, plug the Infinity into an outlet or dimmer - and watch magic appear on your stage or studio. This low cost device is entirely self-contained. You won't need external controllers or power supplies. But you can add additional effects by using it in conjunction with a Vortex Gobo Rotator in the gate of the lighting instrument.

Tomcat's booth featured its Swing Wing truss for moving lights - available in 8' or 10' sections with two or three sets of casters depending on length and load. The Swing wing truss is a 30" box truss with both sides hinged to swing up, forming a catwalk of sorts on top of the truss, and relieving the user of having to drop moving lights on double-hung lamp bars or hanging movers at the venue. The moving lights can be prehung, rigged, wings lifted, and you're ready to rock. A great labor-saver for the touring market.

Tomcat was also showing its new truss spot chair, which is a much more substantial truss spot position than previous models.
