Barbizon | LDI 2008 Show Report

AC Power Distribution, Inc.

www.acpowerdistribution.com

AC Power Distribution had a relaxed and successful showing at LDI. Their ProPower line of power distribution, distributed by TMB, has been selling phenomenally well and they now offer a new line of power distribution boxes designed to make everyone's life easier. The CF 400c in particular seemed to be a welcome addition with its double ground taps and wealth of courtesy outlets so you have fewer adaptors to lose on the road. Look for it in a NEMA 3 enclosure soon.

Altman Lighting
www.altmanltg.com

This year Altman Lighting featured their new two-circuit Smart-Track, Spectra Cyc, and Spectra PAR products. The two-circuit Smart-Track joins Altman's three-circuit version, which has been shipping for a few years. Designed for architectural applications in churches, museums, stores, etc, it carries both power and control to individual fixture heads. Control can be analog, DALI, or DMX to create and store multiple looks. Additionally, you can get fixture feedback when you use RDM.

The Spectra Cyc is a 100W cyclorama / wall wash fixture utilizing red, green, blue, and amber LED emitters. It blends colors via a patent pending LED lens, which reduces pixilation from direct view. Even with the significant amount of ambient light around the booth the output was considerably bright and clean. The lens blends the LEDs better than many units we have seen previously which often emitted blotches of color on the soft goods near the source.

The Spectra PAR 100 utilizes the same color LED emitters as the Cyc. The unit is designed for both architectural and theatrical applications and comes with a four lens set just like a standard PAR. Again, this unit performed very well considering the amount of ambient light.

American DJ

www.americandj.com

The American DJ booth was full of new products this year. Many of their popular club / DJ fixtures are now available with LED sources providing longer lamp life, less heat and greater durability then their traditional halogen lamp counterparts. These very bright LED version units have impressive light output. The compact X-Move LED featured an incredibly bright 20W LED source. Another impressive fixture may have gone unnoticed by many at the show, the new Pinspot LED fixture. American DJ used this unit to light the perimeter of their booth and some of the products showcased inside, however this was one of the most compact and powerful pinspots we have ever seen. Amazingly all of the light from this unit is generated from a single 3W white LED. The fixture features a 6" or 12" lens assembly that can be removed to make a rather nice short throw accent light. Some features to note are the 50,000 hour lamp life, 1lb weight, and the universal power supply (90-240V 50/60Hz), this little gem will find unlimited uses.

DeSisti
www.desistilighting.com

This year DeSisti featured improvements to previously released products. The Tinteretto is a 232W DMX color changing fluorescent which utilizes four 58W lamps (Red, Green, Blue, White) and is primarily used as a back lighting cyclorama system through Duratrans or television set pieces. The new electronics allow the lamps to dim to a true 1% without any lamp flicker. This allows the units to be used in a theatrical application. The Tinteretto can be mounted vertically or horizontally.

The new Giotto Mach2 is the redesigned version of the Giotto cyc light. The new unit is smaller than the previous version and the optical system has been redesigned. The new Giotto 1,000W Mach2 has 95% of the output of the 1,500W Giotto with better light dispersion. The ventilation system has been improved to allow for consistent lamp life.

The new range of chandelier hoists includes 250, 500 and 1,000lb safe working load limits with a travel distance of 80', can utilize three 20A circuits, and can be DMX controlled. The UL-approved disconnect is patented by DeSisti and absorbs any of the weight of the chandelier. The weight is absorbed by a spring loaded docking system.

Doug Fleenor Design
www.dfd.com

As usual Dr. DMX and the gang from Doug Fleenor Design (DFD) had a bunch of really cool devices to solve those problems of making everything all work together. From protocol converters to wireless DMX devices, they have it all and if they don't have it, just ask and Milton can probably make it. One item of interest this year was the LED100. A truly wireless solution to event lighting. The LED 100 incorporates absorptive-glass-mat sealed lead acid batteries, a built in smart charger, wireless DMX receiver and CK-type Power/Data supply. With the LED100 you can power a Color Kinetics ColorBlast 12 or Altman Lighting Spectra PAR for six hours when on full (100% white) and 24 hours on a rolling color fade. Not only saving time, labor and cabling, this unit could allow event lighting designers to place fixtures in locations previously off limits due to cable path restrictions. The LED100 can also be used in a standalone option with preset sequences built into the unit, eliminating the need for a control console at all.

Lycian

www.lycian.com

Lycian was displaying the prototype model of their new 1233 followspot. This unit is tentatively scheduled to be available around the middle of 2009, and will fill the void between the budget models and the high-end models. It will use components already in use from the budget models, with a 200W HMI lamp. Since the components have already been in use for some time, the fixture will be reliable and help lower the cost of the unit. The fan is very quiet, and the outside case is only mildly warm and should not pose any heat issues. Having the HMI lamp will make this spot much brighter than other budget models, making it the perfect solutions for customers that need a really bright followspot, and have a tight budget to work with.

Mole-Richardson Company

www.mole.com

Mole Richardson displayed their Type 6731 2kW tungsten PAR as part of the growing lineup of MR tungsten PAR fixtures. Unlike a 2kW Fresnel, beam spreads are modified by using a series of lenses (from narrow to super wide), as well as a spot to flood focusing mechanism for fine adjustment. Mole Richardson has continued their partnership with GE to develop the HX 2000 lamp for use in this fixture. The lamp's compact filament and horizontal operation are optimized for performance in conjunction with the highly polished parabolic reflector. This fixture offers significant versatility from a long throw, easily controllable tungsten head, to a soft broad source with the addition of a Chimera Bank. This line of tungsten PAR fixtures includes the 2kW, the original 5kW and the Type 6751 10kW tungsten PAR.

Mole Richardson's extensive product offerings were all on display, from their line of HMI PARs, to tungsten Fresnels, softlights to broads, and wind machines to distribution boxes to space lights. A recent addition to their time tested product line is the Molescent Biax series of fluorescent fixtures, which uses the 55W Biax lamp and offers a variety of options to suit almost any application. The fixture is available in two, four, or eight-lamp configurations, with lamps mounted horizontally, in either a straight vertical stack or arranged side by side for a longer more rectangular form factor. Mounting is provided with either an OmniMount ball and knuckle, or traditional yoke with 5/8" receiver. Dimming is accomplished either by DMX control, phase dimming, or with a local control feature.

Mole also had their new 575 and 800 HMI PARs on display. Comparable in price to their competitors equivalents, but a little more compact and great for use with softbanks. The 800 is small enough for one tech to set up on a stand, which makes crewing a bit easier.

Robert Juliat
www.robertjuliat.fr

Robert Juliat designed the Le Cin'k to fill the gap in the market for a powerful Fresnel designed specifically for theatre. Theatres now have a cost-effective, truly theatre-orientated option of interchangeable light sources without having to borrow from more costly studio options. The double slot front cassette has been designed specifically with theatre in mind. The enclosed cassette provides a secure housing for color filters which no longer has to be attached to the front of a fixture with four clips as necessitated by studio fixtures and ensures there is no light spill around the sides. It also accommodates standard theatre accessories and the Robert Juliat rotating barndoors with individual rotating leaves. The Cin'k also offers optional fan-cooling for the accessory slot. This silent fan preserves the life of deeper colored gels, which would normally burn rapidly on a studio Fresnel. The interchangeable lamp compartment is an innovative feature, which renders the fixture ultimately mutable and multi-functional. With the increasing cross-use of both tungsten and discharge light sources in traditional theatre and television applications, Robert Juliat see this as an innovation which will benefit both the venues and the rental companies who supply them. Full dimming is also possible when using the discharge lamp module by the addition of the Juliat DMX-controlled dimming shutter, the Jalousie which can be located in the front accessory slot.

Also at the Juliat booth were the Victor M and Flo followspots. Both products us a MSR 1,800W DE hot restrike lamp. The Victor M has a zoom range of 7-14.5 degree, while Flo is a shorter-range 13-28 degree zoom model. The Victor M is equipped with a DMX-controlled motorized shutter for smooth dimming and precise shutter control. Both Victor and Flo come with electronic ballasts and features like manual fingertip shutter control, fully closing iris, quiet operation, internal frost filter, and photo-quality gobo projections.

Rosco
www.rosco.com

Rosco had quite a few new products on display. The Lite Pad HO, the HO stands for high output and it lives up to its name. With 33% improved efficiency and true daylight color temperature, this is the product for your kit. Alternatively, you can use a pre-assembled Quick Kit with one of each of the most popular sizes and accessories or Pro Gaffer Kit with two of each of the most popular sizes and most all accessories in a Pelican hard case.

TruColor IR Filter is an affordable solution to the color desaturation experienced when using ND to balance a shot using a digital camera. TruColor IR Filters are optically clear and available in a variety of sizes.

New items in the Cinegel line include #3150 Industrial Vapor (converts tungsten to sodium vapor); #3152; Urban Vapor (replicating sodium vapor sources without the green); #3309 Tough Minusgreen (an aid to overcorrecting found when using Full Minusgreen due to lower green content in fluorescent lamps today); #3072 Blue Grid Cloth (raises the Kelvin temperature of a light source); #3082 Straw Grid Cloth (lowers the Kelvin temperature of a light source); and #3090 Moonlight Grid Cloth (creates a soft moonlight effect in conjunction with HMI sources or can be used with tungsten sources to correct to Cool White Fluorescents.)

Another addition to Rosco's growing line of products for the Film and TV industries is RoscoVIEW, a two-part filtration system to control window brightness. Part one is the wide-width polarizer filter gel and part two is a optical glass polarizer camera filter. By rotating the camera filter you can reach a near total blackout at 90 degree cross polarization without affecting lighting or exposure on set.

On the theatrical front is the new DMX Iris. It is super quiet and has a 24-leaf motorized iris. It is compatible with ETC Source Four, Selecon Pacific, and other ellipsoidals. It requires only one channel of DMX or can be set manually with a knob. No power supply is needed to use this DMX Iris.

Two other products of note are the Quick Color Sleeves and DichroFilm. Quick Color Sleeves are flat-welded sheets of any Rosco gel, which allows for almost any size you may need. They can even fit over compact fluorescent lamps. Quick Color Sleeves ship flat; saving on dimensional weight freight charges and can be cut to size with scissors if needed. DichroFilm is a less expensive alternative to Permacolor Dichroic Filters. Great for applications where a flexible filter is needed or there are safety concerns when using glass filters. Extremely heat resistant, it is available in 10 standard colors.

Last, but not least, Rosco will be introducing a new line of belt-driven gobo rotators in early 2009. The new DMX controlled double gobo rotator is nearly silent and has a new design to hold the gobo in place. No more spring retainer rings. It has a locking feature that keeps it steady in the fixture but not replacing the safety cable and allows for a more precise focus. All new Motion Effects products (rotators and irises) will have an on-board power supply so no more additional equipment is required.
