Barbizon's 2005 LDI Show Report is now Available! Check out the newest products showcased at the show! Full Show Report Here Barbizon Capitol and Selecon held a successful workshop at The ShakespeareTheatre in Washington, DC. It was a wonderful opportunity to see new products before LDI in Orlando. Special interest went to the PC and the HUI cyc fixtures. Selecon brought in lighting designer Nic Phillips to give the presentation. The opportunity to hear from a designer using the products in the field was invaluable. Several local DC designers and electricians attended. For the electricians it was a great opportunity to get hands on with the fixtures. For more information on Selecon products click here. Barbizon Atlanta, in conjunction with Artisan Pictureworks, hosted the Power of Lighting Work shops by Bill Holshevnikoff on Friday, November 11 and Saturday, November 12, 2005. Bill will be taking his tour back out on the road in 2006 and used this opportunity to give his workshop topics a final polish. With a combined marketing plan we were happy to have 40 attendees for Friday’s “Lighting and Shooting for the Digital Image” and an oversold crowd of 25 for Saturday’s “Advanced Hands-On Lighting Workshop”. The attendees were from New York, Washington DC, Savannah, GA, Mobile, AL and points in between. Attendees enjoyed being able to see examples of what was being covered by his inclusion of footage of corporate, documentary, commercial, and network news events. It was a very positive learning environment but attendees had a chance to meet and network as well. Bill Holshevnikoff is sponsored in part by Arri, Kino Flo, Tiffen, Chimera, and Lowel. Please see his website for information on his workshop and when one might be coming to a Barbizon near you. You may find him at www.poweroflighting.com This Barbizon publication is an electronic newsletter sent out quarterly by Barbizon to select members of the lighting industry. If you have questions, comments or would like to contribute information about an event or installation using Barbizon, please contact Barbizon’s National Marketing Manager, Traci Lacey at tlacey@barbizon.com. | | Barbizon Boston worked with WFXT Fox-25 in Dedham, MA to design their 7,000 square foot production studio as well as the 10,000 square foot news studio. The facility has six 96 circuit ETC dimming racks, a fixed pipe grid and 20’ diameter circular flying truss with distributed power and DMX. The project required a high degree of coordination with other trades and unwavering attention to the evolving needs of the customer. The SharXS Lamps stand out due to their higher thermal load capacity keeping the stage performers from feeling the heat. This is because the XsSeal Technology increases the maximum heat temperature capacity from 350*C to 450*C. This means more compact luminaire designs -smaller space requirements and a reduced need for forced cooling which means less cooling fan noise. It's modular approach, 5 wattages (200W, 400W, 575W and the 1200W) in the same size and design gives the manufacturer the chance to develop a range of fixtures using modules as well, creating a shorter time to market. High-quality entertainment lighting will benefit from the new lamps with the XS technology. The compact short-arc lamps without outer bulbs are available as single-ended and double ended versions and cover a wide range of wattages from 200-2500 W. They are also great for effect spotlights as well as advertising and slide projectors. Click here for more information on the XsSeal Technology. It provides a simple up/ down control for raising and lowering battens, scenery, or lighting electrics. This Winch is ideal for middle or high schools, but is also usable in some theatrical or studio applications. Cost is truly the main benefit so it creates a reasonable solution where hand winches would have been used. Because the Tork Star wench doesn't provide quick movement of battens, don't try and use it in a professional rigging system that demands timely scenery shifts. This is the next iteration of the color scroller with an unlimited palette of colors. It comes in two versions. The dimmer wheel (SEA-SF) version is an excellent way to control light output for Source Fours that have CDM ballasts or when using an HMI cap as a light source. This allows the light to be easily dimmed without using a shutter mechanism. The other version, Extreme Green (SEA-XG), extends the color palette to include deeper blues, reds, and more vibrant greens. The Sea Changer is currently available only for the ETC Source Four Ellipsoidal. Its shape extends the fixture but is low profile so it can fit where other color changers may not. With a very quiet integral power supply, the Sea Changer is basically plug and play. At over $2,000 per unit, a budget is definitely needed, but the upside is NEVER needing to change scrolls again or having to be tied to external power supplies. These bonuses may offset the price. The P110 is an energy efficient fixture for video studios designed for low heat with high light output and a long lamp life. Videssence has the only patented focusable fluorescent fixture on the market. Instead of buying extra control screens (30/60/90 degree) the Power Key fixture uses one screen and changes its beam pattern by moving the lamps forward and backward in the housing. Due to a better reflector design, the fixture performs as well as a four-lamp fixture but uses only two lamps. The return on investment when using a florescent system is estimated at 2 to 4 years depending on the end users’ daily or weekly production schedule. Click for more information XLR refers to a type of connector rather than the number of pins or the quality of cable. When ordering or renting XLR extensions it is essential to specify the number of pins needed and whether you want data cable or mic quality cable. The make-up of mic cable reduces the integrity of data signals. Using mic cables for data applications such as DMX, MPX, or Microplex signals can reduce the reliability of control costing a lot of trouble-shooting time when something goes wrong. This edition covers various methods of fog exposure monitoring, which were not available or widely used when the 3rd edition was printed. The relative advantages and disadvantages of using time/distance tables and aerosol meters to assure that exposure limits are not exceeded are discussed. As a general information document, the illustrated book gives an unbiased presentation on all types of popular atmospheric fog effects, and offers tips on putting fog where it will do the most good, lighting it effectively, working with fire alarms, and limiting exposure. The Introduction to Modern Atmospheric Effects is availablefrom the ESTA Foundation. |
